Basil Wolverton funnies from EC Comics’ MAD #11
I present to you illustrations by the great Basil Wolverton that appeared in EC Comics’ Mad issue number 11. Wolverton had two relatively big hits in comics; his space hero Spacehawk who was a Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon-esque character and his super strong Powerhouse Pepper. Please enjoy, buckaroos!!
A short quote from where I snatched these images:Basil become well known when he won a contest to submit the ugliest woman for an upcoming LL’L ANBER comic strip in 1946. Then with his Lena Hyena he proved he could draw grotesque beings. See Hyena’s portrait immediately below.

Basil Wolverton: July 9, 1909 - December 31, 1978.
A frequent contributor to MAD magazine and Marvel Comics, Basil Wolverton’s offbeat, “spaghetti and meatballs” style of artwork not only made him a pop culture icon, but solidified his place as one of the greatest American comic artists of all time.
I had a Nash board - got really bummed when it broke in half. But then got a Tony Hawk deck!
Picked this up a little while ago - still need to read it! There’s also a compilation of Mad rip-offs coming out from Fantagraphics.
